“I’m happy to support Pro Natura,” says the buyer of the unicorn marmot, an extremely rare item in the world of crypto philately. These adorable animals are the stars of the Alps and popular with hikers and tourists alike. Over thousands of years, they have adapted well to their inhospitable habitat, which is itself under pressure from climate change and tourism.

Founded for the National Park

Pro Natura – Switzerland’s oldest nature conservation organization, founded as the “Schweizerischer Bund für Naturschutz” – has been committed to improving habitats for flora and fauna since 1909. The aim at the time was to establish Switzerland’s first national park: the Swiss National Park in Engadin was opened just five years later. Over the following decades, a network of more than 800 nature conservation areas was created, covering around 260 km² in total. The organization has 170,000 members and is backed by some 25,000 donors.

Beat Jans, now a Federal Councillor, once worked for Pro Natura, shortly after graduating from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. He quickly rose through the ranks to the Management Board and headed up the organization’s policy division. He recently revealed to the Pro Natura magazine that this strengthened his resolve to get involved in politics.

Delight over Swiss Crypto Stamp donation

“Around half of natural habits are under threat. According to the Federal Office for the Environment, over a third of our animal and plant species are endangered or have already died out,” explains Richard Geer, a member of Pro Natura’s Management Board. He is delighted by the donation from the “unicorn” auction. “Each year we give a large sum to support the Swiss National Park,” he says. Marmi feels very much at home in Graubünden, too.
